Shanghai Pavilion sets itself far apart from most Chinese restaurants with its “sleek and modern” décor and upscale dining room. But what draws the large and diverse crowd to this Upper East Side gem is the amazing food.
New York Magazine recommended that readers head to the restaurant for a “fancy Shanghai feast” and the buzz has continued as the restaurant has since been featured in a variety of different articles and on websites – all giving glowing reviews.
Insiders recommend the Peking Duck, the Velvet Sea Bass, and the pork dumplings. You can also try the Beggar’s Chicken; a vegetable stuffed chicken that must be ordered a day in advance. For upscale Chinese, there is no better place!
Jumbo Shrimp with Roasted Garlic
Velvet Sea Bass—Lightly steamed and flavored with Chef’s special dark sauce
‘Wu Xi’ Spare Ribs on green veggies
Crispy Baby Chicken Glazed with brown spicy sauce
Red-Cooked Chicken with tender chestnuts
Steamed Pork Juicy Dumplings
Braised Beef with dried chili pepper in spicy hot oil
Wonton Soup is good. Sesame chicken is just ok. They accidentally sent noodles rather than the fired rice I ordered. When I called to get it corrected, the guy that answered the phone was extremely apologetic and had the correct item sent to my house very quickly. Good job Shanghai Pavilion.

Always fast delivery. Consistent great food and priced right. My only Chinese spot I order from on seamless - not oily or greasy just good

Rest of menu also good
Nice selection of dishes for lunch specials

Terrible, oily food with little flavor. Delivered promptly, though.

Excellent and Authentic!

This is an awesome place. Food is delicious and deliveries are fast. My personal favorites are shrimp fried rice and curry puffs chicken. So fresh and flavorful.

No good at all. Takes way too long and the food is just terrible.

The dumplings are good

The food was dreadful and tasteless. Will never order again.

I was from SH and I think this place is more than good to be called authentic (to a NYC standard tho.)

love the crispy duck and salt and pepper pork!

Perfect chinese takeout! I love the chicken and mixed vegetables, and I'm addicted to the hot and sour soup (I always order two or three). I seriously have a problem. The only bad point for me is the delivery service...they usually forget something important like the soup or the rice and then offer to credit you. Um. How does that work for me when I'm starving today??

Very good chinese food dellvery, possibly the best on UES. Delivery is just as fresh as dine-in quality

If you prefer the taste of perfume this is definitely the restaurant for you. 0 Stars. Blegh.

The WORST! Just received my lunch, spare ribs & fried rice. It doesnt get any more putrid! The ribs were coated with grease & the rice was drenched in oil. And how about that poor excuse for egg drop soup? STAY FAR AWAY!

The food is very disappointing. The egg roll was inedible. I would rate this among the WORST Chinese food in the UES.

All the dumplings were great. Everything else was mediocre.

everything ordered was wrong and no one understood me when I called back to complain. The "wrong" food appeared very oily as well

quite, quite good. Outside of china town, perhaps the best delivery you can find for dumplings and this type of food. My Chinese friend really enjoyed it also.

The food arrived incredibly late, all the food was cold!!! Even worse then that, all the containers arrived open and there was food all over the bag. Disgusting!!

One of the worst Chinese meals my family and I have ever had. The Chef Special stewed pork was gelatinous, undercooked and drenched in the brown sauce (as was the spinach underneath it). The spare ribs had the same "green veggies" (spinach) and was equally drenched in the brown sauce. The cold sesame noodles were too soft, drenched and a bit stale. The wonton soup was sweet and disgusting. The seafood hot & sour soup was good -- but it wasn't enough to make up for a yucky meal that cost too much for what it was.

Best Chinese food in the area... I love their hot & sour soup, their HUGE eggroll's and their food is amazing... Delivery is so fast and they're so nice.

TERRIBLE CHINESE FOOD
overly salty to cover the fact that it's not fresh. the duck was supposed to be a warm appetizer but it came out of the fridge, probably from over night. the wrap on the dumplings were also hard; fresh ones are tender.

The spring rolls were mushy on the inside? And the lo mein is slimy and doesn't taste quite right. Will not order again.

Amazing Chinese food especially when you go there. Try the cold sesame noodles they are great!

I gave Shanghai another chance after my first mediocre experience and was pleasantly surprised. The Chicken With Broccoli was the best I've had of this classic on the Upper East Side. Further, the Bar-B-Q Roast Pork (basically boneless spare ribs) was fantastic!

Good neighborhood chinese food. Reliable noodle, chicken, and beef dishes and great dumplings. Try the steamed pork soup dumplings. They are very delicious and they hold up suprisingly well when delivered.

I like the food here. The diet dishes allow you to choose three+ vegetables to include which I really love. All in all, very tasty and fast delivery service.

The food here was pretty middle of the road. Kindof greasy, not much flavor. It is fine for standard fare chinese-american, but there is better fast chinese to be found on the UES.

THIS IS THE BEST SESAME CHICKEN I HAVE HAD. EVER. EVER.

Authentic Shanghainese food- fresh and tasty with many seafood options. Dumplings are thin-skinned like they should be; even the rice is good.

One of the best Chinese restaurants on the Upper East Side. The Velvet Sea Bass travels surprisingly well, the Red-Cooked Chicken is always tasty, and the Green Tea Chicken is a really unique dish. And best of all, if you're picky, you can create your own dish entirely!

Horrible! The delivery guy screamed at me!
Posted 3 years ago by Christian C.
wish i could review it - still waiting over an hour for it to arrive!
Posted 3 years ago by Adam V.
Their pork & pork and crab dumplings are decent.
I usually get them delivered, which probably isn't the best way to eat them, but they are still pretty good. I would say when you order them for delivery, 4 of the 6 dumplings are still intact (which is important). The rating should be more like 3 1/2 stars instead of just 3.

Comparable to Chinatown Brasserie, Chin Chins or any other top Chinese place in NYC. I will admit from the outside it looks like a typical "nice chinese" place but once you sit down (or order out) you know that you found somewhere special.
Let me give you an easy example. Their General Tso's Chicken is ALWAYS white meat. They do not add additional salt or sugar to any of their dishes. If you have a favorite chinese dish that you can't find on the menu, simply ask them and if they know how to make it, they will.
Is it a bit more expensive? Yes. But you get what you pay for. I have never had a bad experience here. The service and food is exceptional.

hot & sour soup had some weird gelatinous substance in it... tiny portion of dumplings.

Good, fast delivery service and food was good enough to just scrape 4/5.

bad cuts of beef

Don't know why everyone else is rating this so high. This food should cost 7:00 per dish instead of $13-$15 for the quality. Ordered and literally was delivered in 10 minutes when I live at least 10 minutes away from the restaurant.... fast delivery is not always a good thing.

I've ordered from Shanghai twice since moving to the UES and both times the service has been friendly and quick. The food is very tasty and arrives hot and fresh. I would definitely recommend the sesame chicken and scallion pancakes and will be ordering from the restaurant again! However, if you need utensils and napkins be sure to request them when ordering.

Chicken was SOOO dry...Lo Mein was SOOOO greasy.
And the portions were pretty puny considering the price.
Posted 4 years ago by Aaron R.
Not the best soup dumplings I've had, but they're still pretty good, and it's the only place I know that delivers them on the UES
Posted 4 years ago by Eunice K.
Best Chinese on the UES. I've never eaten in the restaurant, but the delivery is fast, and the food is good. The chicken appears to be pieces of actual chicken meat, not blobs of fatty goo like you get from most Chinese places. I will never order Chinese from another restaurant. If Shanghai Pavillion is closed, I will just order Dominos. Seriously, there is no substitute.

not bad but not great... the dumplings are nothing like joe shanghai's :(

My go-to for Chinese food. Nothing great, but definitely fills the void.

This restaurant is THE BEST! Get the JUICY PORK DUMPLINGS!!!
Posted 5 years ago by Raquel B.
Very fast delivery but TINY portions for food that's pretty expensive. I ordered the shrimp and lobster and the dish came with ONE piece of lobster and maybe 4-5 pieces of shrimp for over $20. The delivery was so fast and the food was lukewarm that it makes me wonder whether it was fresh cooked or not.

read the reviews but am very disappointed. ordered wonton soup (too salty, only 2 wontons), juicy pork dumplings (weird vinegar dipping sauce) and the always reliable general tso's - very sweet., dry, not crunchy. best in ues? uhhh

Best Chinese on the U.E.S. Get the juicy dumplings!
